Journal of a Wedding Photographer - February 2024

Hello February!

January and February are always really busy months when you are a wedding photographer. So many couples get engaged between the Christmas period and Valentines Day- and it's a leap year - and after the venue, the wedding photographer is usually one of the first suppliers to be booked. I love a good proposal story and a good engagement shoot.

Engagement shoots are a great way of getting used to being in front of a camera. You can learn how to feel more natural and less self conscious. You can figure out if you'd like a little direction to capture the shots you want or if you've got it covered. They are also great for creating images you can use for your invites or use on your wedding day. I don't typically advertise engagement shoots simply because my weekends are generally full of weddings however a beautiful midweek shoot in a blustery field can usually twist my arm!

I have certainly been busy this month behind the scenes getting contracts ready, getting equipment organised for the new season, meeting some of my couples for coffee and chats and trying to keep up to date with social media (which I am awful at incase you haven't noticed!). So many new bookings taking me right the way through to 2026! I can see that 2025 and 2026 are going to be super busy so my advice to you is to tie down your suppliers.

I love the spring. Flowers start to grow and I hate gardening btw but love spring flowers! Take influence from some of the beautiful colours that can be used in spring weddings. Here are some of my favourites;

Springtime weddings are wonderful. Often they are the first big celebration of the year for people after the hibernation of the winter and Christmas period so folks are truly ready to have a great time. The early springtime blossoms alongside the spring colours of daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths are a great influence for colour and shape. When choosing a venue, consider one that has plenty of hardstanding ground as the grass can still be very wet and muddy. Bee and Pete's wedding at Thwaites Watermill in Leeds had a lovely balance of indoor and outdoor space and hardstanding and soft standing ground. As it happens, that April day was stunning. See how the spring colours and shapes influenced Bee's choices.

February - you have been busy!

See you in March,

Lisa
